# Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi has denounced claims by the private sector that the National Health Insurance would cost 1.3-trillion-rand annually. Motsoaledi argues this inflated figure is mathematical hooliganism, meant to scare the public and undermine the NHI’s goals. According to News24, critics, including Momentum Health Insurance, estimate the plan’s cost to be as much as the entire government budget. The minister maintains that the NHI will reduce healthcare costs without over-relying on private hospitals.
# The MK Party has welcomed the High Court in the Western Cape dismissal of the case brought by ten former party members of parliament. The court ruled in favour of the party, with costs, after it had dismissed the MPs after they defied orders to refrain from being sworn in. In a statement, the MK Party expressed relief, emphasising that the matter should have been handled internally and that the judgment vindicates their position against ill-discipline within the party.
# Lead claimant in the Tiger Brands listeriosis class action, Montlha Ngobeni, says she is facing financial hardship after her daughter, born during the listeriosis outbreak, suffered severe complications. Her daughter has had six surgeries due to listeriosis-related brain damage, causing ongoing health issues. Richard Spoor Incorporated and LHL Attorneys have launched the #TigerBrandsMustPay campaign, seeking compensation for over one-thousand claimants. In a media briefing, Ngobeni asserts she had to sell her house to cover medical bills:
# The DA’s motion to have the Knysna Municipal Council dissolved and to call for fresh elections in the municipality, failed to garner the required two-thirds majority. Parties including the ANC, EFF, and Patriotic Alliance voted against the motion. The DA’s, Ryan Smith, says they tabled the motion to rid the Knysna Council of its over-fragmented composition, which has allowed the coalition of corruption to band together to loot the municipality:
# Rugby: Head coach Scott Robertson expects difficult questions back home after the All Blacks’ failed visit to South Africa. The once-feared team lost four matches in a row to the Springboks, leaving them in an unprecedented third place on the Rugby Championship log. The Kiwis also unexpectedly lost to Argentina in their first match in the competition. Robertson says Saturday’s Test in Cape Town was a fantastic match. He congratulated the world champions, saying they know how to get the job done.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-86-cents and the euro at 19-rand-73-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-36-cents and Bitcoin trades at 57-thousand-153-dollars-58-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-506-dollars-79-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars-87-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The Princess of Wales has confirmed that she has completed her course of chemotherapy, after revealing in March that she had been diagnosed with cancer. Kensington Palace released a video montage featuring Catherine with her husband and three children. The Princess of Wales says the last nine months have been incredibly tough and the cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone:
