# Raymond Parsons says the government of national unity could benefit South Africa’s economy
# And Benjamin Netanyahu disbands Israel’s war cabinet
# ActionSA president, Herman Mashaba says the party will not hesitate to keep the ANC-DA government of national unity accountable where it fails to achieve social justice or provide opportunities for the people. Mashaba says ActionSA will use its position in legislative platforms to push its own policies, including igniting job creation, implementing an opportunity fund to undo the legacy of apartheid, and ensuring that no academically deserving student is excluded from tertiary education:
# Professor Raymond Parsons of the North-West University Business School says the government of national unity’s policy outlook will likely tilt South Africa towards an investor-friendly stance. Parsons says a government of national unity could also give impetus to key collaboration between government and business in the areas of energy security, logistics, and dealing with crime and corruption. He says optimism about the government of national unity should remain cautious, but if the government plays its cards well, it could enable South Africa to achieve a bigger, stronger, and better economy eventually.
# The Commission for Gender Equality is concerned that young people are not playing a big enough role in the mainstream of the economy. The commission’s spokesperson Javu Baloyi is calling upon the youth to unite behind the common goal of ensuring a better future for all, wherein gender equality, equity, and social justice will be realised:
# The EFF leader, Julius Malema will be appearing in the East London Magistrate’s Court, in the Eastern Cape, today. This is in connection with charges alleging the discharge of a firearm at the EFF Fifth Anniversary Celebrations at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane in 2018. Malema was charged with the contravention of the Firearms Control Act after firing the rifle in a public space.
# Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dissolved his six-member war cabinet. This widely expected decision follows the departure of centrist opposition leader Benny Gantz and his ally Gadi Eisenkot. Israeli media report that sensitive issues about the war with Hamas in Gaza will now be decided by a smaller forum. The war cabinet was set up five days after the 7 October Hamas attacks against Israel, during which one-thousand-200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. More than 37-thousand people have been killed in Gaza since then.
# Tennis: French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz has set his sights on more grass-court successes after his first title on the clay at Roland Garros. The 21-year-old became the youngest man to win major titles on all three surfaces – grass, hard courts, and clay – with a five-set victory over Alexander Zverev in Paris last Sunday. He is the defending champion at Wimbledon and is looking to repeat last year’s double of winning at both Queen’s Club and the grass-court Grand Slam. Alcaraz begins his Queen’s Club campaign today against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo.
