# As part of Mandela Day celebrations, Project Flamingo will attempt to perform 30 breast cancer surgeries across two provinces in a single day. On Saturday, the teams across five hospitals in the Western and Eastern Cape will perform the surgeries, which are aimed at addressing the urgent need for timely cancer care in the public health sector. The hospitals involved are Groote Schuur, Tygerberg, George, Cecilia Makiwane and Livingstone. Project Flamingo says this record attempt marks a significant milestone in the fight against breast cancer.
# Stellenbosch University says 50-million-rand has been donated to students in the Faculty of Theology and the Department of Music. The donation was bequeathed to the university in a donor’s last will and testament. The donor has opted to remain anonymous. The university’s Hugo Steyn says the donation is specifically earmarked for bursaries allocated to financially disadvantaged undergraduate and postgraduate students within Theology and Music. The bursaries will be awarded from next year.
# The Safer South Africa Foundation is collaborating with the government in Mpumalanga, the private sector, community leaders, and civil organisations to address social crime and financial illiteracy. Initiatives include the communities justice programme, which educates youth on the criminal justice system and provides training in life skills, leadership, computer literacy, and budgeting. The foundation’s Gicks Moyane says the programme also focuses on poverty reduction and food security:
# University of the Western Cape postgraduate student, Babongile Bidla, is encouraging young people to start their own businesses. She established her business, Cross Horizon Ventures, last year. The Political Studies Master’s candidate is now set to join the EMS Small Business Clinic team. The clinic is part of the experiential learning and incubation space for UWC students. Bidla says she will now be at the forefront of interactions with business owners and exposure to mentors from industry and government agencies:
# And finally: Universal Pictures’ and Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 rose to the top of the North American box office on its first weekend in theatres. The film, starring Steve Carell, grossed over one-billion-rand over three days. The franchise has out-earned Shrek, Toy Story, and Frozen, and is the 15th-highest-grossing franchise of all time. Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is second at the box office, making over 543-million-rand with Apocalyptic horror A Quiet Place: Day One, in third place.
