Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# South Africa’s Chelsea Flower Show exhibit, inspired by the windswept slopes of the Cape Mountains, won gold in London. Designer Leon Kluge and artist Tristan Woudberg led a group of volunteers to create this year’s multi-award display which included large clay sculptures that formed the backdrop for a display of fynbos cut flowers. This is South Africa’s 38th gold medal in its history at the show, dating back to 1976. Kluge says 22-thousand stems were used in the display:
# Literary awareness organisation, Book Dash, has achieved a significant milestone by printing 600-thousand children’s books, marking their largest print run to date. This is part of its commitment to promoting literacy among South African youth. Recognising the importance of access to storybooks for every child, Book Dash distributes books for free to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Over the past few years, more than 128 original storybooks, across eleven indigenous languages, have been created by volunteer creative teams.
Meanwhile, Build One South Africa’s leader, Mmusi Maimane, is currently on a national tour for his new book Dare to Believe. The book was launched in Sandton City, Johannesburg, last night. BOSA’s spokesperson, Roger Solomons, says Maimane will visit the Alexandra Children’s and Alexandra Eighth Avenue libraries to donate early prints of his new book:
# Kgaugelo Modise has become the first female graduate to obtain a doctorate in Industrial Engineering at the Tshwane University of Technology. She titled her thesis, Development of a Predictive Model for Energy and Carbon Efficiency for Future Transport Manufacturing Enterprises. Modise says she hopes her achievement will inspire young girls to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. TUT says her pioneering accomplishment demonstrates the power of perseverance, dedication and hard work.
# And finally: The return of the popular Glastonbury Festival will this year see the launch of two unique venues in Somerset, England. The likes of Dua Lipa and rock kings Coldplay will headline the festival returning on the 26th of next month. Organisers say the Wishing Well venue will be a place in which people ignite their deepest desires, while Scissors has been dubbed an utterly delicious femme-queer venue. The venues will replace the legendary Rabbit Hole.
