# eThekwini Municipality says it’s all systems go for the 14th annual Durban Fashion Fair, which takes place at the Durban Exhibition Centre from tomorrow until Friday. This year’s theme is The Awakening. Approximately 60 established and emerging designers are set to unveil their imaginative collections on one of Africa’s most influential fashion stages. Well-known TV and radio personality, Somizi Mhlongo, says he will launch his highly anticipated women’s collection, the Sompire Femme, at the fair:
# Nelson Mandela University, in partnership with Google, launched the Digital Ubuntu Cybersecurity/AI Seminars for students. This initiative aims to help 100 students build cybersecurity and artificial intelligence capacity. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about cybersecurity and explore career pathways in the field. The programme is being rolled out by the university’s Africa Hub for Youth Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation. The institution says emerging technologies like artificial intelligence bring new opportunities for developing innovative solutions for the improvement of society.
# Tshwane University of Technology’s Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment student, Nick Xolani Nkosi, is currently representing South Africa at the third International Geological Championship in Russia. He is one of six students from South Africa competing against 250 participants from 17 Russian regions and 14 other countries. GeoChallenge is a competition designed for young geology professionals and students, aiming to promote careers in geology, improve skills and encourage collaboration with potential employers. Nkosi says the competition provides a valuable platform to gain international exposure.
# Hisense South Africa has welcomed 100 young people from Atlantis, Cape Town, into a year-long learnership and skills development programme at its Western Cape manufacturing plant. The initiative, aimed at unemployed youth aged 18 to 28, combines classroom training with full-time workplace experience and culminates in a SETA-accredited qualification. Hisense says the programme empowers participants with advanced manufacturing and digital innovation skills, tackling unemployment while preparing them to compete in the global work space.
# And finally: The 77th Emmy Awards held on Sunday evening were the most-watched Emmys since 2021. CBS‘s telecast brought in 7.4-million viewers, which is an eight-percent increase from the 6.9-million viewers achieved by last year’s ceremony, which aired on ABC. On social media, the award show received 1.6-million mentions and trended in the US at number one for seven consecutive hours. This year’s Emmys were hosted by Nate Bargatze and saw Adolescence, The Studio and The Pitt taking top honours.
