BULLETIN 9 September
Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# This year, PNA has set its sights on raising 2.5-million-rand, as part of its annual nationwide fundraising event, designed to uplift South African and Namibian communities. The fundraising campaign, which started on Nelson Mandela Day, July 18th, concludes with the PNA Funky Socks Day on Friday. The event supports four vital non-profit organisations, Breadline Africa, CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA, Rally to Read, and Matla a Bana. On Friday, people are encouraged to purchase a sticker for just ten-rand and wear their funkiest socks.
# The West Coast town of Hopefield is preparing to come alive with the Fynbos Quilt Festival hosted by the Good Hope Quilters Guild from 8 to 11 October. Themed ‘Create. Connect. Care‘, the four-day event will feature exhibitions, workshops, and community gatherings, drawing more than 500 visitors. Activities include classes on quilting, botanical printing, knitting, and crochet. The festival also includes a Hexagon Bee Hive Project to raise funds for community outreach.
# Organisers of the annual Soweto Kota Festival, held at the Dobsonville Stadium over the weekend, say the event was a major success. Hundreds of people turned up to taste the most creative versions of every township’s much-loved street food. Thabane Ledwaba of 2 Selai walked away with the Best Kota of the festival title and prize of 25-thousand-rand. Second place went to Zaza Eatery and third to Ko-boiketlong Situations. Festival director Sidwell Tshingilane says the event has grown into something far bigger than just food.
# Tshwane University of Technology Public Affairs student, Khomanani Makamu, says representing South Africa at the World Student Games in Germany earlier this year was a career-defining milestone. The Games, one of the biggest multi-sport events in the world, saw 150 nations competing for medals across 18 sports. Twenty-two-year-old Makamu, a Limpopo-born basketball player, says competing against bigger, faster and more skilled opponents helped build his confidence. He says he hopes to continue representing South Africa on the global stage.
# And finally: Warner Brothers and New Line’s The Conjuring: Last Rites topped the North American box office in its opening weekend. The film stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren who attempt to vanquish a demon from a family’s home. Disney’s rerelease of the groundbreaking stage musical Hamilton debuted at number two, with the rerelease of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws in third. Warner Brothers and New Line’s Weapons and Disney’s Freakier Friday, both now in their fifth outings, held steady in fourth and fifth place.
