# As the world commemorates International Day of Charity today, Inyathelo, the South African Institute for Advancement, is calling on citizens to support the non-profit sector. This day is to raise awareness and mobilise people, NGOs, and stakeholders globally to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities. Inyathelo’s Feryal Domingo says citizens must also engage in volunteer work and advocate for social justice and equity:
# The Tshwane University of Technology has received the prestigious International University Sports Federation Healthy Campus Gold Label certification. This is in recognition of the institution’s exceptional dedication to health, wellness and holistic student development. Advancing from its previous Silver Label, TUT stands out in promoting physical activity, mental health, nutrition, disease prevention, sustainability and community engagement. The university’s vice-Chancellor and Principal, professor Tinyiko Maluleke, says this achievement reflects TUT’s commitment to the comprehensive well-being of students.
# PepsiCo South Africa and Polyco have partnered to sponsor women reclaimers in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, through the Invest in Dignity Foundation and the Supa Mama Women in Recycling initiative. This collaboration provides financial support and resources, such as recycling trolleys and dignity packs, to improve the working conditions and income potential of women reclaimers. Polyco’s Chantal Philander says with a joint investment of over 387-thousand-rand, the sponsorship has delivered 40 custom-designed recycling trolleys:
# The City of Cape Town says 104 events were hosted in August, generating economic activity of around 200-million-rand for the metro. The events in August, which included rugby, film and lifestyle festivals, attracted approximately 250-thousan people, including spectators and participants. The Rugby Championship clash between South Africa and Australia attracted August’s biggest crowd, with over 62-thousand fans at the Cape Town Stadium. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security JP Smith says they are already gearing up for an even busier September.
# And finally: The Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton is being released in theatres this weekend. The stage production of Hamilton, which tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton and his involvement in the American Revolution, earned 16 nominations at the 2016 Tony’s, taking home eleven awards in total, including the coveted best musical award. The filmed version of Hamilton combines the best elements of live theatre and film in an astounding blend of hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway.
