# The City of Cape Town says it has its very own pod of common hippopotamus that has called the Rondevlei section of the False Bay Nature Reserve home since 1981. This small family group of hippos has, over the past four decades, formed a critical and very special part of the wetland ecology. Mayoral committee member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Eddie Andrews, says naturally, hippo pods contain approximately ten to 15 animals and comprise of one dominant male, and females with calves:
Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town’s Community, Arts and Culture Development Department is hosting an annual exhibition of works by emerging artists. The exhibition, which runs until next week Friday, is being hosted at The Lab in Woodstock. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross, says this year’s theme is Abantu Abasha which means a new generation, inspiring artists to explore the meaning and perception of self-reflection through their art form:
# The University of the Witwatersrand says the Graduate Recruitment Programme, which facilitates dialogue between academia and industry, contributes to developing highly skilled and employable graduates. The university recently hosted the annual Graduate Recruiters Breakfast, which saw over 200 attendees and a record-breaking 79-company turnout. Vice-chancellor, professor Zeblon Vilakazi, says the university is committed to fostering graduates who are leaders with integrity.
# One of the last works by Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, Portrait of Fraulein Lieser, has sold for around 615-million-rand at an auction in Vienna. The painting was considered lost but it recently emerged that an Austrian citizen had privately owned it. It is believed to depict one of the daughters of either Adolf or Justus Lieser, who were brothers from a wealthy family of Jewish industrialists. The im Kinsky Auction House says the painting is one of the most beautiful of Klimt’s last creative period.
# And finally: Taylor Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, has made history on Spotify. It has become the first album in the app’s history to pick up a billion streams in a single week. The single Fortnight featuring Post Malone became the most-streamed song in a single day in Spotify history on its first day of release. The album has already become the bestselling vinyl release in a single week in the modern era by selling 700-thousand copies in its first three days of release.
