BULLETIN 5 August
Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# The iconic Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company has officially reopened its doors to the public. This follows the completion of its annual maintenance. Executive director Selma Hercules says the annual shutdown allows them to carry out essential upgrades and make sure the cableway runs at the highest possible standards. She adds the maintenance is aimed at ensuring optimal safety and operational efficiency. The company recently won a silver medal in the Managing Waste category at the 2025 WTM Africa Responsible Tourism Awards.
# The Freedom Front Plus has congratulated its councillor in Ekurhuleni, Denise Janse van Rensburg, for winning the prestigious Charity Title at the Mrs Commonwealth South Africa pageant. The competition is an empowerment platform for married, divorced or widowed women aged between 20-and-55-years-old. It focuses on community service, personal growth and inspiration through charitable and social projects. FF Plus’ Jennifer Glover says Van Rensburg is a worthy and deserving recipient of the title:
# The City of Tshwane says a total of three-thousand stands will be allocated and registered to qualifying residents of Marry Me Informal Settlement in Soshanguve. Residents are discouraged from building new shacks outside the borders of the informal settlement, as this would delay the process of formalisation. Mayoral committee member for Human Settlements, Aaron Maluleka, says those who qualify for housing will be relocated to a new area, Kopanong, where walk-up houses will be constructed. Other residents will be allocated stands.
# The latest exhibition at the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria sees six artists showcasing their artworks in an exhibition titled One and the Many. Their artworks range from a large red sail, weighted at the bottom with salt packs, to opulent paintings of the late business mogul, Richard Maponya, and his wife, and a gold-coloured sculpture filled with air. The university says the exhibition is a story, with the art forming the characters, the setting, the plot and the themes.
# And finally: The art collection of one of Europe’s most prominent collectors, Pauline Karpidas, will be auctioned off next month. Billed as the most valuable private collection ever offered in Europe, Pauline Karpidas: The London Collection, will feature 20th-century art and custom furniture. A highlight of the auction of over 200 artworks and design pieces is René Magritte’s La Statue volante, described as a jewel of late Surrealism. Sotheby’s says Karpidas’s collection speaks to a life steeped in creativity, curiosity, and enduring relationships with the artists and designers she championed.
