# The North-West University has conferred an honorary doctorate on distinguished Caribbean historian and vice-chancellor of the University of the West Indies, professor Hilary McDonald Beckles. The award recognises his formidable academic contributions and his global advocacy for social justice. He has written over 100 peer-reviewed articles and 20 academic books. Beckles describes the honorary doctorate as a deeply personal honour:
# Johannesburg ombud Siduduzo Gumede is urging residents to support the Poortjie community in Region G by donating new or used books and brand-new socks. Under the theme, It is in your hands, the campaign aims to bring warmth, dignity, and hope to a community facing hardship. Gumede says each donation offers more than material help, adding that a warm pair of socks says a person is seen and cared for, while a book reminds someone that their dreams matter.
# The Cape Forum and the International Agricultural Academy for Africa have joined forces to help learners at agricultural schools in the Western Cape to unlock a career in agriculture. This is part of i3A’s school programme. Cape Forum’s Bernard Pieters says this partnership will make it possible for learners to start their agricultural studies in diverse agricultural disciplines, including beef production, crop production, wildlife management or viticulture, from Grade 10:
# Western Cape MEC of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, handed over housing units at the Eendekuil housing project in the Bergrivier Municipality, well ahead of schedule. This eleven-million-rand project, which was projected to be completed in September, has delivered 45 Breaking New Ground housing units. Simmers says the Eendekuil project forms part of the Piketberg and Porterville housing projects that are ongoing and also set to be completed ahead of schedule:
# And finally: Forbes’ fifth annual 50 Over 50 list spotlights trailblazing women who have rejected the conventional wisdom that their best years are behind them. This year’s list is divided into four broad categories: impact, innovation, investment, and lifestyle. The list includes actress Halle Berry, who is laser-focused on women’s health, founder of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement, Maria Shriver, and Krystal Biotech co-founder, Suma Krishnan, who is developing breakthrough solutions for diseases. Other notable names on the list include Meals on Wheels CEO Ellie Hollander and activist Monica Lewinsky.
