# The Do More Foundation has launched their Mandela Day Campaign and called on South Africans to take action for young children by helping to build climate-resilient early learning or Early Childhood Development centres in underserved communities. The foundation’s Jessica Ronaasen says this year’s Mandela Day campaign centers on the powerful idea of a better climate future begins with the children, which starts with play. She says as climate change intensifies, young children are particularly vulnerable to the impact:
# The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation has recognised the cultural, architectural and academic importance of the newly-restored University of the Witwatersrand Anglo American Digital Dome with the unveiling of a historic Blue Plaque. The plaque pays tribute to over 60 years of the Wits Planetarium’s contribution to education, science, and civic life. The university says the dome’s development will soon be entering a third stage, with the addition of content development facilities and a permanent display housing the historic old Zeiss Projector.
# Funda Nenja is commemorating 16-years of making a difference in empowering children while promoting educational dog training in townships in Mpophomeni, KwaZulu-Natal. The animal welfare charity, which began in 2009 as a dog training class during the school holidays, has grown into an internationally recognised organisation. Co-founder, Heather Somerville, says the organisation now runs as a One Welfare non-profit organisation that promotes animal care, kindness, and community upliftment. She says that the group continues transforming lives for both human and canine.
# Rugby: The South African Rugby Union, SuperSport, and the SABC announced an agreement between the two media houses for the SABC to broadcast the upcoming second test between South Africa and Italy. The agreement has been reached in recognition of the historic nature of the match, which will mark the 30th anniversary of the Springboks’ 1995 Rugby World Cup victory. It forms part of the celebrations by SARU to commemorate this historic moment for the country. The match on 12 July will be broadcast live on SABC 2, SABC Radio stations, and on SuperSport.
# And finally: South Africa’s Leah van Deventer has again secured a place on the prestigious Bar World 100 list, compiled by Drinks International. Ranked 50th this year, Van Deventer is recognised for her influential role in education, writing, and mentorship within the global bar industry. Van Deventer is celebrated for championing inclusivity and advocating ethics, equity, and sustainability, with impactful work spanning Africa and beyond. She also founded the Sisterhood for Industry Support and was named Mentor of the Year in South Africa.
