BULLETIN 25 June
Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# The eThekwini Municipality says Africa’s greatest horse racing and fashion event, the Durban July, will this year inject around 690-million-rand into the metro’s economy. The event at the Greyville Racecourse next weekend will feature a star-studded lineup including multi-award-winning Afro-pop duo Mafikizolo, the band Sunset Sweatshop, and songstress Lira. The metro’s spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, says sectors including fashion and textiles, transportation, restaurants, hair and beauty, and businesses selling fast food, will benefit from this event:
# The head of Clinical Unit for Paediatric Pulmonology at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, professor Pierre Goussard, will participate in the Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon in Switzerland next Saturday. His department desperately needs an Olympus bronchoscope that allows doctors to investigate the airways of critically ill infants and children. Since launching his Given Gain campaign, Goussard, who is also a professor at Stellenbosch University, says he raised 46-thousand-760-rand to date, which is roughly 12-percent of his target:
# University of Pretoria students Tumelo and Owethu Mahan are making a name for themselves as high-performance swimmers. The brothers have represented the country at major competitions, including the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships and World University Games. Next month, Owethu will participate in the World University Games in Germany. Tumelo, who will participate in the AUSC Region 5 Youth Games in Namibia, says they are also passionate about giving back:
# The winning design for the national memorial for Queen Elizabeth will feature a bridge with a balustrade made of glass, new gates and commemorative gardens. Lord Norman Foster’s design team has been announced as the winner of the competition for a memorial to honour Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, to be built in St James’s Park in central London. The translucent bridge is inspired by the shape of the late Queen’s wedding tiara. The design will also feature her husband, Prince Philip, alongside a traditional, large statue of the late Queen overlooking the Mall.
# And finally: Orcas in the North Pacific have been seen massaging each other by rubbing pieces of kelp between their bodies. Researchers used drones to film the animals and think the massages might have a health or hygiene function. They also believe they are a form of social bonding, while appearing to be an example of tool use in killer whales. Over 12 days of studying a population of orcas in the coastal waters off Washington State, the team recorded 30 bouts of kelp massage.
