# The Black Coffee Foundation has raised 500-thousand-rand to support flood victims in the Eastern Cape, where 90 people have died and thousands have been displaced. Since the first evacuations, the foundation has provided food, clothing, and toiletries to affected families in Mthatha. Musician DJ Black Coffee has also asked South Africans to continue assisting victims with items such as blankets, warm clothing, non-perishable food, and baby supplies. Donations can be made through the foundation.
# The National Sea Rescue Institute is calling on South Africans to take the Winter Solstice Plunge on Saturday, which is also the longest night of the year. South Africans are urged to take a sea dive or a bucket of icy water as a symbolic challenge supporting life saving missions. The event raises funds for rescue operations, survival swim training, and water safety education. From coastal volunteers to inland supporters, all are urged to take the icy leap and make a real difference this winter.
# North-West University’s Social Sciences and Economics student, Maano Rambwa, says becoming financially independent motivated him to venture into entrepreneurship. In 2023, he launched a small business selling sweets around campus, Candy Corner, and for two years saved money to buy a vehicle. The car is now registered under the Bolt e-hailing service, and he offers private transport services to students and residents in Mahikeng. Rambwe says running a business while studying requires structure and self-discipline.
# The City of Cape Town says the number of libraries taking part in this year’s round of chess tournaments has more than doubled, with 66 already signed up, compared to last year’s 32. The annual event is known as chess@libraries, with mini-tournaments leading up to the finals taking place in October. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says the initial rounds of chess at the individual libraries will kick off at the end of this month:
# And finally: The most anticipated sports action blockbuster, F1 The Movie, had its premiere at Times Square in New York City. The film tells the story of a former F1 driver, Sonny Hayes, played by Brad Pitt, as he makes a comeback to partner rookie teammate Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris. The movie hits theatres on the 27th. One of the producers, British racing driver Lewis Hamilton, says he is happy with how the movie turned out:
