# The University of Pretoria has once again performed strongly in this year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject. The annual QS subject rankings cover 55 narrow subject areas, which are then grouped into five broad subject areas: Arts and Humanities; Engineering and Technology; Life Sciences and Medicine; Natural Sciences; and Social Sciences and Management. Sixteen of the University of Pretoria’s subject offerings are ranked in the top 450 offerings by universities worldwide, and 18 are ranked in the top three among South African universities.
# Cape Town deputy mayor Eddie Andrews and The Voice South Africa Season two winner, Craig Lucas, both graduated from the University of the Western Cape. Known for his musical talents, Lucas graduated with a Masters in Development Studies, expressing a strong desire to pursue a PhD in the near future. He focused his thesis on youth aspirations in Bonteheuwel. Andrews, a former Springbok rugby player, received his Bachelor of Administration Honours:
# The Keep Pietermaritzburg Clean Action Group has launched the Ellie Bank Project. This project entails creating an elephant or Ellie Bank out of recyclable materials and inviting friends, family, the community, or schools to fill its belly with a 20-rand note or empty cans. The group’s executive director, Lara Edmonds, says the funds raised will empower them to fulfil its mandate to get Pietermaritzburg clean, neat, beautiful and green.
# As Smile Week draws to a close at Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in the Northern Cape, 25 children have had their smiles restored after undergoing reconstructive surgery. Most of the surgeries involved cleft lip and palate repair. Since its inception in 2002, the Smile Foundation has assisted more than four-thousand children from disadvantaged backgrounds get reconstructive surgery. The foundation’s CEO, Tarri Parfitt, says donations continue to be crucial for sustaining such impactful initiatives.
# And finally: The Government Communication and Information System has congratulated HOT 102.7 FM for its recognition at the 2024 New York Festivals Radio Awards. The station was awarded Bronze in the Best News Report/Feature: Human Interest Feature category for its ‘Beginner’s Guide to Online Dating’ series. GCIS acting director general, Nomonde Mnukwa, praised the station’s achievement, highlighting South Africa’s talent and media diversity on a global stage.
