# The National Department of Transport is hosting the inaugural Truck Driver Safety and Wellness Symposium in Boksburg themed ‘Your wellness is our concern.’ The Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics, Kedibone Diale Tlabela, says this event aims to promote safety on the roads for truck drivers and other motorists. She says it will also encourage and celebrate truck drivers for ensuring smooth operations within the freight logistics industry:
# The eThekwini Municipality recently hosted the biennial Water and Sanitation Student Conference, as part of endeavours to explore innovative solutions to water sustainability and improved sanitation. The conference hosted 50 schools from rural and urban areas in eThekwini. Learners presented their innovative solutions in four categories, namely models, presentations, poetry, and posters. Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, says the participating schools were awarded a shared prize money of 150-thousand-rand:
# The Helderberg Academy of Theatre presents its third kid’s production in the form of Peter Pan at the Playhouse in Somerset West, Cape Town. Francois Retief leads the production as the often chaotic but always well-meaning Peter Pan himself, while Captain Hook is portrayed by Leizl Rice. Sheraine de Vries surprises in her interpretation of sassy punk chick Tinkerbell. The production, directed by Darryl Spijkers and narrated by Playhouse favourite Zané Habig, runs from today until the 16th of this month.
# Rowing: The University of Fort Hare says student Asekho Jara never considered leadership her strongest suit – until taking up the oars two years ago allowed her to discover an entirely different version of herself. The 21-year-old, who won gold in the women’s Quad event at the recent Buffalo Regatta, has come into her own as a formidable stroke who leads from the front at the stern of the boat. The B.Com Law graduate who is pursuing a two-year LLB qualification, started the sport in January 2022.
# And finally: Agricultural union TLU SA says the 20th Goliat van Gat pumpkin festival could see a record-breaking giant pumpkin on the 16th of this month at the Pretoria Boeremark grounds. The current record is held by Wykus Lamprecht who presented a pumpkin weighing 890 kilograms. TLU SA’s chairperson, Henri Combrink, says the hope is to get a one-ton pumpkin this year, and that is why they have established a substantial additional prize of 25-thousand-rand to encourage growers:
