Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# South Africa’s spatlo sandwich, famously known as kota, has made CNN Travel’s list of the world’s 25 best sandwiches. The kota is made from a quarter loaf of bread that has been hollowed out and filled with a variety of ingredients, including meat, chips, egg, polony, and achar. Spain’s Bocadillo de jamón Ibérico, which is thinly sliced meat with cheese, piled on bread and drizzled with olive oil, tops the list. Other sandwiches that have made the list include New Orleans’ Po’boy, the UK’s Chip butty, and Uruguay’s Chivito.
# The One Thousand Women Trust has launched a competition titled From-Bystander-to-Upstander to mobilise learners across South African schools to address bullying. Learners are encouraged to showcase how the 5 D’s of being an upstander, Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay, and Direct, can be utilised to intervene when bullying occurs at schools. This can be done through creative mediums such as posters, songs, poems, stories, or graffiti. The organisation’s co-founder, Tina Thiart, says the fun-filled competition it encourages innovative ways of speaking out against bullying.
# One of the oldest children’s homes in South Africa, the Durbanville Children’s Home, has benefited from a 150-thousand-rand donation from the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Fund. The home houses 144 children, aged between two and 18-years-old from the broader area, informal settlements, farms and rural surrounds. Mayoral committee member for Corporate Services, Theresa Uys, says the fund is part of the metro’s strategic objectives as set out in its Integrated Development Plan:
# Shooting: The seventeen-year-old Ruben Rudling from Port Shepstone will represent South Africa at the British Junior Internationals in England in August. Selected as one of just two learners from KwaZulu-Natal, Ruben’s passion and skill in shooting earned him a place on the South African Schools Shooters Union’s national tour. Although his family has raised over half of the 75-thousand-rand needed for the trip, Ruben is appealing for further support via his BackaBuddy page to help make his international dream a reality.
# And finally: A Swiss man has broken the Guinness World Record by spending more than two-hours buried in the snow. Competitive powerlifter Elias Meyer took on the challenge of the longest time spent in direct full-body contact with snow while wearing just his swimming shorts. The most recent attempt by Poland’s Valerjan Romanvoski in 2022 lasted one-hour-45-minutes-and-two-seconds. Meyer, who set a new record time of two-hours-and-seven-seconds, says the weight of the snow pressing down on him bothered him more than the cold.
