# South Africa’s Le Grand Domaine has won two top trophies at the 2025 International Wine Challenge this week for its 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon. Competing against global giants like Bordeaux and Napa, the Stellenbosch winery clinched the International and South African Cabernet Sauvignon trophies. Winemaker Debbie Thompson called the award a proud moment for local wine. Owner Bernard Fontannaz praised the vineyard team and the cellar’s women’s power team for their exceptional dedication and craftsmanship.
# Author Bernardine Evaristo has been awarded The Women’s Prize Outstanding Contribution Award, a one-off literary honour to mark the 30th anniversary year of the Women’s Prize for Fiction. The accolade is in honour of her career’s work, which includes her Booker-winning novel Girl, Woman, Other, and Mr. Loverman, which was recently adapted as a BAFTA-winning series. Women’s Prize founder director, Kate Mosse, says throughout her 30-years in the literary sphere, Evaristo has been a powerful voice for inclusion and increased representation in literature and the arts.
# Stud Game Breeders has awarded bursaries worth 900-thousand-rand to Tshwane University of Technology students in the Department of Nature Conservation. The bursaries have been presented to 52 students pursuing a range of qualifications, including diplomas in Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation, a postgraduate diploma in Conservation Management, a Master of Applied Sciences and PhD programmes. To date, the Stud Game Breeders Transformation Fund has awarded 317 bursaries, amounting to a cumulative investment of more than 9.5-million-rand.
# The University of Pretoria has congratulated staff members and departments that have been nominated as finalists in the 27th National Science and Technology Forum-South32 Awards. Widely known as the “Science Oscars”, the awards recognise outstanding contributions to science, engineering, technology and innovation. The UP staff members and departments have been named as finalists in several categories, including, Green Economy Award, the Agricultural Research Council Award, and the Communication Award. The award ceremony will be held next month.
# And finally: The likes of Elton John, EMPIRE founder and CEO, Ghazi Shami, and afrobeats superstar, Tems, were recognised at Billboard’s inaugural Global Power Players event in London. The event celebrated music industry leaders from across the world. John collected the Creators’ Champion Award, in recognition for standing up for the creative industry, and calling for fair usage and protections for music rights holders concerning artificial intelligence models. Shami was the recipient of the coveted Clive Davis Visionary Award, while Tems received the Diamond Award.
