# Roadrunning: Four University of Pretoria staff members are set to tackle South Africa’s most famous ultramarathon, the Comrades Marathon, to raise funds for students facing financial difficulties. More than 80 nations will be represented in the race, a down-run over approximately 89 kilometres from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday. Proceeds raised by doctor Bianca Frost, Josiah Mavundla, Mfundo Nyitana and professor André Ganswindt will benefit the Vice-Chancellor and Principal’s Scholarship Fund. The university says these runners remind everyone that any goal worth achieving takes time and endurance.
# Newly crowned 72nd Miss World, Opal Suchata Chuangsri, from Thailand, says during her reign she will continue with her Beauty With a Purpose project, For HER. The project is a breast cancer awareness initiative aimed at education, early detection, and empowerment. She is the first Thai woman to win the title. Chuangsri says she is determined to make women’s health a global conversation:
# The annual Cape Town Games recently saw 292 young people put their skills on display at Erica Park in Belhar. Participants from across the metro took part in friendly competitions including five-a-side soccer, fast-five-netball, dodgeball, three-a-side basketball, dominoes, and table tennis. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says this annual event celebrates the power of recreation in promoting fitness and social cohesion:
# University of the Western Cape Analytical Chemistry professor, Priscilla Baker, is the 2025 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Laureate for Africa and the Arab States. The university says Baker is breaking barriers with her pioneering research in wearable electrochemical sensors while advocating for greater inclusivity in STEM fields. Baker says that by actively sharing her journey, she has become a tangible example for female students to explore careers based on capability, not stereotypes:
# And finally: Disney’s blockbuster Lilo and Stitch, which is the second top-grossing Hollywood release of 2025 behind A Minecraft Movie, remains at number one in the box office for the second consecutive weekend. Paramount and Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, starring Tom Cruise, is second, with Karate Kid: Legends opening at number three. In its third outing, Final Destination: Bloodlines came in fourth with another newcomer, A24’s supernatural horror film, Bring Her Back, launching in fifth place.
