Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# South African craft breweries dominated the 2025 African Beer Cup in Cape Town, winning dozens of medals. Nearly 260 brews from 14 countries were judged. Soul Barrel Brewing clinched the top award for best beer on the continent with its Wild African Soul, a sorghum-based beer made in collaboration with Tolokazi Beer. Richmond Hill Brewing Company also excelled, earning five medals from five entries. The winners were praised for highlighting South Africa’s leadership in African craft beer innovation.
# Reach For A Dream is calling on South Africans to wear slippers and buy a 20-rand sticker for Slipper Day on Friday. The campaign supports children battling life-threatening illnesses by turning their dreams into reality. Funds raised help bring joy and hope to young patients. The organisation says each sticker is an investment in a child’s dream, urging the nation to do it for the dreamers.
# A group of dedicated hikers, including Paralympian Mpumelelo Mhlongo, completed a 500-kilometre trek through the Cape mountains to raise 50-thousand-rand for STEPS, a charity supporting children born with clubfoot. Their efforts will fund treatment for 20 children, helping them to walk confidently. Mhlongo, a chemical engineering PhD candidate and athlete, joined the cause to champion disability inclusivity. His participation highlighted the importance of equal opportunities for children with physical challenges.
# A group of 26 drama students from Upstage Concepts Performing Arts Studio in Johannesburg staged a 12-hour performance, raising over 75-thousand-rand for the Rivers Foundation. Watched by friends, family, and coaches, the students sang, danced, and acted through the night in support of vulnerable communities. The funds and donated goods will aid the foundation’s outreach programmes in education, food, and healthcare. Organisers hope to make the performance marathon an annual tradition.
# And finally: Arabella Stanton, Dominic McLaughlin and Alastair Stout have been cast to play Hermione, Harry and Ron in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series. More than 30-thousand actors auditioned for the lead roles since an open casting call was launched last year. The three join fellow cast members, including John Lithgow, who will play Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall. It is expected that there will be seven series of the show, each season adapting one of the Harry Potter books by JK Rowling.
