# The Motor Industry Staff Association has donated 120-thousand-rand to the Prostate Cancer Foundation to boost awareness and early detection efforts. The union, representing over 71-thousand members, has expressed commitment to promoting regular cancer screenings. The association’s spokesperson, Sonja Carstens, says early detection is crucial, as most cases are diagnosed too late:
# South Africans recently laced up and stepped out for the global May50K challenge, raising over 300-thousand-rand for Multiple Sclerosis. This is more than the original 100-thousand-rand goal. Over one-thousand-600 people participated, showing unity and strength. Paralympian Kat Swanepoel led the charge with a 50km swim. Thirty-percent of the funds will help local Multiple Sclerosis services, and 70-percent will power global research.
# The University of Fort Hare recently launched an impactful community initiative aimed at supporting the development of young children at Alice Primary School through Kinderkinetics lessons. Kinderkinetics targets children from birth to age 13, with a focus on promoting optimal gross motor and neuromotor development. Registered Kinderkineticist, Xonnè Muller, says activities are tailored to address developmental milestones, enhance coordination, and build foundational movement skills, all while making fitness fun.
# Streaming giant Netflix has stepped in to save the long-running children’s show Sesame Street, after Warner Brothers Discovery opted not to renew its five-year deal for the programme. Netflix has signed a deal with Sesame Workshop, which will see the streaming service air season 56 later this year. The new season will feature fresh format changes and the return of fan-favourite segments like Elmo’s World and Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck. Sesame Workshop says it is excited to continue helping children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.
# And finally: Two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington received a surprise honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in France on Monday, in recognition of his outstanding career. The 70-year-old attended the festival for Spike Lee’s latest film Highest 2 Lowest, in which he stars alongside A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright and Ilfenesh Hadera. Other winners of the honorary Palme d’Or since it was first presented in 2002 include Jodie Foster, Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, and just last year, Meryl Streep and George Lucas.
