# Two South African restaurants have made the coveted World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants list for 2025. Stellenbosch’s VUUR, which is ranked 87, has also been named Africa’s Best Steak Restaurant, while Johannesburg’s The Blockman is ranked 97th. Argentina’s Don Julio Parrilla, located in the heart of Buenos Aires’ ever-vibrant Palermo district, tops the list. It is followed by Margaret in Sydney, Australia, and Laia Erretegia in the picturesque town of Hondarribia in Spain.
# The elusive Boosmansbos long-tailed forest shrew has been found in the Western Cape for the first time in 46 years. Conservationists from CapeNature discovered the critically endangered mammal during an expedition. Using pitfall traps airlifted by helicopter, the team captured, recorded and released the tiny 13.7-gram creature. First described in 1979, the shrew is found only in Boosmansbos Wilderness Area. Genetic analysis and further research will follow to understand its status and ecology.
# The Chinese consulate in Johannesburg has donated 250-thousand-rand worth of school furniture to Progress Comprehensive High School in Pimville, Soweto. Consul General Pan Qingjiang handed over desks and chairs. Joined by Gauteng legislature speaker Morakane Mosupyoe, Pan said the gesture reflects the strong ties between China and South Africa and a shared commitment to education. Mosupyoe praised the donation as a critical investment in township schools facing infrastructure challenges.
# Apple Music has launched The Sounds Of Africa, a new initiative highlighting the musical influence of five African cities: Johannesburg, Accra, Dar es Salaam, Lagos, and Nairobi. The campaign features curated playlists and DJ mixes by local artists. Johannesburg’s playlist includes voices like Kwesta, Nandi Madida and Samthing Soweto, celebrating the metro’s legacy from Kwaito to Amapiano. Apple Music says Africa’s influence on the global music industry has never been more powerful as it is today.
# And finally, motorsport: Renowned Formula One commentator and former driver, Martin Brundle, has become the latest OBE recipient. The 65-year-old was honoured for his services to motor racing and sports broadcasting, with Prince William presenting him with the award at Windsor Castle. The British veteran of 158 Grand Prix races has been part of Sky Sports F1’s coverage since the channel launched in 2012. Brundle says he is lucky and privileged to receive this honour:
