Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# The University of Pretoria is celebrating the graduation of 12-thousand-950 students this month, and about 48.4-percent made it to the finish line with the help of financial support from the institution. One of the initiatives that made this possible was the Giving Day campaign, which was launched in 2022 to raise 100-million-rand to support missing-middle students. Vice-chancellor and principal, professor Francis Petersen, says this is a powerful reminder of the transformative role that financial aid can play in a student’s life.
# A powerhouse of African fusion and global rhythms, Romeo Mputu, has officially landed in South Africa. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, raised in South Africa, and now based in the US, Mputu’s visit coincides with the much-anticipated release of his latest single, Love on Distance. Record label, Much Better BMK INC’s spokesperson, Patience Edward, says Mputu’s visit will include exclusive private performances, promising an intimate experience with one of Africa’s most dynamic musical exports:
# The City of Cape Town’s Library and Information Services is once again hosting a writing competition for children aged between 9 and 13-year-old. In 2024, the competition, which focused on environmental awareness, garnered entries from 100 young people. The theme this year focuses on a mysterious box. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says the writer has to imagine that they are exploring their school or local library, when they stumble upon a hidden mysterious box:
# Oscar winner George Clooney has earned his first-ever Tony nomination for his debut Broadway performance in Good Night, and Good Luck. The awards reward excellence in Broadway theatre over the past year. Audra McDonald received her 11th nomination, for her role in Gypsy, making her the most nominated performer in history. Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, and Maybe Happy Ending are the productions that earned the most nods, with ten each. The 78th Tony Awards will be hosted by Wicked star Cynthia Erivo on June 8th.
# And finally, today is International Harry Potter Day, a celebration of author J.K. Rowling’s beloved wizarding world. Rowling’s literary series holds the Guinness World Record as the highest-selling series by a single author at over 500 million copies sold. All seven of the original Harry Potter series of books were made into eight films, which were shot in the United Kingdom and Ireland. From rereading the books and hosting themed parties to reenacting favourite spells, this is a day people are encouraged to let their inner wizard shine.
