# Two talented architecture students from the University of the Free State, Jeanré Erasmus and Gustav Pretorius, have achieved national acclaim by winning the prestigious Italian Design Day 2025 Competition. Their innovative exhibition space, inspired by The Dancer, a dynamic ceramic sculpture by renowned South African artist Andile Dyalvane, captivated the judging panel and received top honours from among 45 entries submitted by 140 students from across South Africa. Erasmus and Pretorius agree that the competition has reinforced their belief in architecture as a powerful tool for storytelling and human connection.
# The Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation has launched a skills development programme aimed at bridging the digital divide and empowering the next generation of creators. This initiative focuses on providing young people with essential digital skills, fostering innovation, and enhancing employability in the rapidly evolving digital economy. By creating opportunities for youth to access training and technology, the Foundation’s Gugu Motlanthe hopes the initiative can ensure that no one is left behind in the digital age:
# Western Cape MEC for Education David Maynier says nominations for the 2025 National Teaching Awards are now open until 16. The awards give the province the opportunity to celebrate teaching excellence, and to appreciate the outstanding work done by teachers in public schools each year. Maynier says all teachers, school governing bodies, and district officials are invited to submit nominations to their principals or centre managers:
# An exhibition titled, A World for Women, by Women: Infinite Possibilities, is currently showcasing at the United Nations headquarters in New York City until the fifth of next month. The exhibit highlights the strength and resilience of women and girls worldwide, showcasing their stories of empowerment, progress, and transformation. The UN says through artificial intelligence-enhanced digital innovation, the exhibit features the challenges women face and the boundless opportunities that emerge when rights, choices, and autonomy are upheld.
# And finally: In its second weekend of release Warner Brothers’ kid-friendly movie, A Minecraft Movie, remains number one at the worldwide box office. The film, which stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa is already the highest-grossing film of the year. The King of Kings, an animated faith-based family film from Angel Studios, debuted in second place. In third place is 20th Century and Disney’s Rami Malek spy thriller The Amateur. A24’s Warfare opened in fourth place with Universal and Blumhouse’s horror film Drop rounding out the top five.
