BULLETIN 8 April
Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# Warren Eva has made history as the first South African to summit one of the most dangerous mountains in the world, Mount Annapurna in Nepal. He reached the summit at eight-thousand-and-91 metres, cementing his place among elite mountaineers. This achievement follows his historic climb of the second tallest mountain in the world, K2 in Asia, in 2022. Despite dangerous conditions, Eva and fellow climber John Black pushed forward to the summit, raising 57-thousand-rand for the charity organisation, Food 4 Hope.
# The FNB top 40 exchange-traded fund has been voted as the best South Africa Equity – Total Investment Return over 10 years for the second consecutive year. It was recognised at the annual South African Listed Tracker Awards. The bank was also awarded the best Foreign Equity – Actively Managed Certificate Total Investment Return over 3 years. FNB’s Daniel dos Passos says being recognised for continuously providing first-class investment products in a very competitive market is truly remarkable:
# Cape Peninsula University of Technology will bestow an honorary doctorate on its former deputy vice-chancellor professor, Anthony Staak, in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. The 69-year-old retired in 2018 after dedicating 37-years of his career to advancing Higher Education. CPUT says Staak has overseen the graduation of thousands of students and encouraged young people not to consider this day as the end of their education journey, but rather as one milestone in a lifetime of future goals and ambitions.
# The University of Pretoria has once again secured a 100-percent pass rate in the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants’ first professional examination, the Initial Assessment of Competence. This is the third consecutive year in which the university’s candidates have achieved this feat. Of the 20 candidates in the country who passed this year’s IAC with honours, 25-percent are from the institution. The university’s Margaret Chitiga-Mabugu says these results reaffirm the institution’s commitment to producing future-ready chartered accountants of the highest calibre.
# And finally: Award-winning Hollywood actor, Robert De Niro, will receive the honorary Palme d’Or at the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival next month. He follows in the footsteps of fellow honorees such as Meryl Streep and Jodie Foster. De Niro has had a long relationship with the festival, presiding over the judging jury 14-years ago, and walking the red carpet for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. He says Cannes brings everyone together, storytellers, filmmakers, fans, and friends, and is like coming home.
