# A trio of fine art graduates from Nelson Mandela University, Sarah Walmsley, Jeffrey Allan and Jonathan van der Walt, designed a futuristic resin trophy for the national Schools SA20 cricket tournament. The sculptural piece, commissioned by Cricket South Africa, went to the winning boys’ and girls’ teams in the finals in Tshwane, this past weekend. The trophy has three raised right hands cast in clear resin, infused with colour. Walmsley says the creative process was a hybrid fusion of old and new artistic techniques, including 3D printing.
# For his 49th birthday, Grammy Award-winning South African DJ Black Coffee hosted an exclusive live auction, to raise money for his newest initiative, the Black Coffee Music Academy. The auction featured one-of-a-kind pieces including a limited-edition Rolex and a signature Nelson Makamo artwork. In total 3.1-million-rand was raised for the academy. The artist says the academy will provide tertiary-level music education, covering music production, the business of music, and much more:
# Taylor Swift, Benson Boone, and SZA were some of the winners at the 12th annual iHeartRadio Music Awards in Los Angeles. Swift won eight awards including artist of the year. Gracie Abrams won breakthrough artist of the year, while country artist of the year went to Jelly Roll. SZA won R&B artist of the year for the third year in a row. Benson Boone’s Beautiful Things was named song of the year. Lady Gaga received the Innovator Award, while Mariah Carey received the Icon Award.
# Comedian Conan O’Brien will return to host the 98th Academy Awards next year. This announcement comes two weeks after he hosted his first Oscars, which brought in over 19-million total viewers, making it the number one prime-time entertainment telecast for the 2024/’25 season. The broadcast also had a dominant presence on social media, racking up 104.2-million interactions, surpassing both the Grammys and the Super Bowl in online engagement. The 98th Academy Awards will be on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
# And finally: Paramount’s action-comedy, Novocaine, starring Jack Quaid topped the North American box office in its debut weekend. Warner Brothers sci-fi space film Mickey 17 directed by Bong Joon-ho slipped to second place with Steven Soderbergh‘s new movie Black Bag in third. Marvel holdover Captain America: Brave New World remained high on the chart in its fifth weekend, coming in at number four, with A Looney Tunes Movie: The Day the Earth Stood Still rounding off the top five on its debut weekend.
