# Award-winning actor and director, Thomas Gumede, was honoured at the Krimson Horyzon International Film Festival held in India. He received the best feature film award for his film Family and Rugby. Starring Bongile Mantsai and Ayanda Makhayi, the film follows a young rugby star’s journey as he struggles between his sport and the harsh realities of township life. In 2022, Gumede’s Netflix film Kedibone won the best African film at the Septimius Awards.
# The University of Pretoria’s choir, TUKS Camerata, is set to headline the National Conference of the American Choral Directors Association in Dallas, Texas, this month. The ACDA aims to foster choral singing and promote an understanding of choral music as an important medium of contemporary artistic expression. TUKS Camerata, led by conductor Michael J Barrett, will perform choral pieces in some of South Africa’s indigenous languages, offering insight into some of the country’s cultural elements.
# Stellenbosch University has been recognised by the 2025 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings by Subject. A total of one-thousand-747 institutions were ranked across 55 narrow subjects in five broad subject areas. These are Life Sciences and Medicine, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Management, Natural Sciences, and Engineering and Technology. Stellenbosch was ranked in 21 of these subjects, excelling in Life Sciences and Medicine. The university’s Sibusiso Moyo says the rankings reaffirm the quality of the institution’s academic programmes.
# As part of its Year of Service Excellence, the University of Fort Hare spotlights the remarkable contributions of some people at the institution who embody the spirit of service and compassion. One of them is Nosicelo Buwa. The 44-year-old social worker’s key project is the Disability Awareness and Wheelchair Drive. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the daily challenges faced by students with disabilities. Buwa says she is determined to keep pushing for a more inclusive society.

# And finally: The Crew for a Cause charity has partnered with the Star Foundation to provide scholarships for ten gifted learners from underserved communities in the Western Cape. The 460-thousand-rand donation seeks to help enable these learners to attend prestigious high schools, offering them a chance for a brighter future. This partnership aims to continue to provide valuable educational opportunities and support for their academic success.
