# Western Cape MEC of Finance and Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger, says tourism in the province is continuing to grow and strengthen. Total international air arrivals to Cape Town International Airport between January and February this year surpassed the 200-thousand mark, breaking all previous records in the last five years. Wenger says at key attractions in regions across the province, visitor numbers are up 20-percent year on year:
Meanwhile, Boulders Beach in Cape Town has been ranked as the second-best beach in the world by BeachAtlas. The London-based start-up considered input from 42 experts to create its Golden Beach Award 2024. The criteria included classic beauty, inclusivity, and cultural significance. Last year Boulders Beach made the World’s 50 Best Beaches list. Bora Bora in French Polynesia took first place while Namibia’s Skeleton Coast was ranked at number nine.
# North West acting premier, Dunile Nono Maloyi, says the new state-of-the-art Saruchera Primary School in Huhudi, Vryburg, will be life-changing for hundreds of children. Construction of the school started in 2020 with an investment exceeding 80-million-rand. The department’s spokesperson, Mphata Molokwane, says the school boasts 24 modern classrooms, an administrative block, a library, a soccer pitch and a multipurpose hall:
# Two Johannesburg librarians, Lindani Sikhakhane and Lindo Dlamini, have won the 2023-24 Smart City Innovation Challenge with their idea for a library-helpful app. Their app aims to streamline the sharing of information and communications technology tools among libraries, making it easier to track laptops and tablets used across different programmes. Joburg Libraries has committed to collaborating with them and the University of the Witwatersrand’s Tshimologong Innovation Hub to develop the app, pending funding availability. This innovative solution promises to revolutionise library resource management.
# And finally: Cannes Film Festival official selection director, Thierry Fremaux, says they expect to surpass the two-thousand mark for films submitted for selection this year. This year’s edition is already heating up, with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga already confirmed to premiere at the festival and Quentin Dupieux’s A Second Act, starring Léa Seydoux, set as the opening night film. Fremaux says this year’s Cannes will be presided over by American filmmaker, Greta Gerwig, who directed the blockbuster movie Barbie.
