# eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba accepted a donation of a beach sand cruiser wheelchair from the Smith family, whose son Reece is quadriplegic and loves being in the sea. The wheelchair is specially made with robust materials for use on sand and in the sea. Xaba says this donation will go a long way to ensure accessibility of the beach for those who are disabled. He has also committed to purchasing more of these wheelchairs to improve accessibility at all beaches
The City of Cape Town meanwhile says the annual Identikidz programme kicks off in Strandfontein next Saturday. The programme aims to keep children safe and provide accompanying parents and caregivers peace of mind when visiting the beach. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross, says last season 133-thousand-730 children were tagged over five priority weekends, with 302 children reunited with their loved ones:
# Stellenbosch University’s communication and marketing specialists won 36 awards at the Marketing, Advancement and Communication in Education Excellence Awards in Cape Town. This is the most awards given to one institution. This year, 19 higher education institutions from around the country submitted 293 entries in the awards, which recognise excellence in marketing, advancement and communication. Stellenbosch University won five gold awards including for the Positioning SU for the future campaign, 15 silver awards and 16 bronze.
# Nal’ibali director Lorato Trok was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the 2024 Durban International Book Fair. She was celebrated for her significant contributions to promoting literacy in African languages. Nal’ibali is a national reading-for-enjoyment campaign. It seeks to spark and embed a culture of reading in children from birth to 12 years of age, across the country, through cultivating, enticing reading content in all South African languages.
# And finally: Four-time Grammy Award winner Ed Sheeran is set to perform in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan next month, becoming the first-ever international artist that the country will play host to. The concert on the 25th of January will be part of the British singer-songwriter’s Mathematics Tour. Sheeran will also perform in India, China, and the Middle East before moving on to Europe. Buthan, a landlocked Buddhist monarchy of about 700-thousand people, is located between China and India. It began slowly opening to the world in the 1970s.
