# Cape Town has solidified its status as a global filmmaking hub with a 900-million-rand film studio project at Paardevlei, Somerset West. The metro has approved a lease agreement for the development of a state-of-the-art facility, set to create hundreds of jobs and boost the local economy. With future plans for a sea and underwater sound stage, mayoral committee member for Economic Growth, James Vos, says this development will significantly enhance Cape Town’s position in the global creative industry.
# A24’s A Different Man starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, won Best Feature at the Gotham Awards in New York. The nominees were selected by committees of critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators. Sing Sing won two awards with Colman Domingo winning Outstanding Lead Performance and Clarence Maclin walking away with the Best Supporting Performance award. Nickel Boys also won two awards for Best Director for RaMell Ross and Breakthrough Performer for Brandon Wilson. The Gothams also honoured the likes of Angelina Jolie and Zendaya.
# The University of Cape Town’s master of business administration students claimed victory at the Geneva Challenge in Switzerland, a global competition spotlighting groundbreaking solutions to pressing societal challenges. Competing against 222 teams from 94 countries, the UCT team’s project, Mntase Cares – Mobile Clinics for Youth Empowerment, emerged as the winning innovation. The project addresses the critical issue of teenage pregnancies in South Africa. UCT’s Catherine Duggan says the students continue to demonstrate the power of innovation and collaboration on the world stage.
# The University of Pretoria’s Institutional Advancement and Enrolment and Student Administration Departments secured 23 wins at the Marketing, Advancement, and Communication in Education Excellence Awards. The awards recognise the achievements of specialists and practitioners in marketing, advancement and communication in South Africa’s higher education sector. Some of the awards the departments received include gold for the Choose UP Day direct campaign, silver for UP Gets #Ready4Work, and bronze for the Lead UP podcast season four.
# And finally: Former Formula One chief executive, Bernie Ecclestone, says he will sell his entire car collection. The collection is made up of 69 cars, including world championship-winning Ferraris raced by the likes of Michael Schumacher and Niki Lauda. The collection, which was assembled over more than five decades, will be sold through sports and race car dealer Tom Hartley Junior. Ninety-four-year-old Ecclestone says he loves all his cars, but the time has come for him to start thinking about what will happen to them when he dies.
