# Miss South Africa, Mia le Roux, will debut her national costume and evening gowns originally designed for the Miss Universe pageant at Cape Town Fashion Week. She was forced to withdraw from the 73rd Miss Universe competition held in Mexico earlier this month, due to severe vertigo. Le Roux says countless hours of work went into these one-of-a-kind, magnificent pieces, and she cannot wait to wear them proudly. The fashin week is happening at Kenilworth Racecourse this weekend.
# BirdLife South Africa has named the red-billed oxpecker as their Bird of the Year for 2025. The bird will be celebrated all year long, with resources made available for learners on the society’s website. Oxpeckers perform a service to their hosts as well as the overall ecosystem by controlling tick populations. They also benefit their hosts by providing an early warning system of approaching danger. The bird is a cooperative breeder where up to seven helpers will assist the breeding pair to raise their young, which are normally raised within holes in trees.
# The University of Pretoria Museums’ art exhibition titled, To Not Forget: 30 Years of Democracy 1994-2024, is continuing to captivate art lovers. The exhibition features over 30 carefully selected South African artworks, each piece representing a significant moment in the university’s transformative journey since the dawn of democracy. The university says since the advent of democracy, it has significantly expanded its collection with new acquisitions, emphasising inclusivity, diversity and representational balance. The exhibition which opened in April comes to an end on Saturday.
# eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba says the launch of the Durban Beach Café is yet another significant milestone in the metro’s effort to enhance the beachfront as a key tourism asset. The property was part of the first batch of properties to be advertised in 2021 after the metro adopted the Proactive Land Release Strategy. Xaba says the redevelopment has created an iconic tourist destination on the beachfront:
# And finaly: Sixteen-time Grammy Award winner Adele has wrapped up her record-breaking Las Vegas residency at the Colosseum Theatre at Caesars Palace. Legendary singer Celine Dion opened the Colosseum with her first residency in 2003. Weekends With Adele, which started in November 2022, became one of the highest-grossing and highest-drawing residencies in Las Vegas history, making her one of the biggest acts of all time. Adele says the residency has been a dream for her:
