# ActionSA says it takes pride in celebrating the resilience, strength, and contributions of persons with disabilities in the country. November is National Disability Rights Awareness Month. Approximately 3.3 million people are living with a disability in South Africa. ActionSA’s Khomo Mashala says the recognition and inclusion of disability issues within the mainstream dialogue are not just normal imperatives, they are essential to fostering an equitable and just society:
# University of the Witwatersrand’s Gabrielle Nthabiseng Mudiwa is the 2024 recipient of the Achmat Dangor Literary Prize. Awarded for the first time this year, the prize aims to ensure the enduring legacy of Achmat Dangor, an acclaimed South African writer and activist. The 28-year-old writer is currently completing a joint Honours in African Literature and Creative Writing. Wits says Mudiwa’s work stood out of nearly 40 applications for its unique narrative voice and command of the language, capturing themes of memory, displacement and continuity in South Africa.
# The African Eye Institute has partnered with the Domino Foundation to improve vision for hundreds of school children in underserved KwaZulu-Natal communities. Through their One School at a Time initiative, the institute has screened up to 366 learners at Inanda Primary School, providing 78 with glasses and referring 138 for further consultations. The institute says by addressing vision impairments, this partnership enhances learners’ learning and development, as clear vision helps them better engage in the classroom and absorb information effectively.
# The My Cape Town Market is back, and vendors from across the metro are encouraged to join this iconic summer event in December. The market offers something for everyone, with activities for families and friends, including live shows and gaming experiences. Vendor applications close on midday on the 20th of this month. Mayoral committee member for Economic Growth, James Vos, says the market is the perfect opportunity for small businesses and creators to reach new customers:
# And finally: Lionsgate has announced that its Michael Jackson biopic titled Michael will hit theatres on the third of October 2025. Starring in the title role is Jaafar Jackson, who is the nephew of the late pop superstar. The biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua also includes Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo. It will include 30 songs and will provide moviegoers with an inside look at the most prolific artist who ever lived.
