# South African actor and voice-over artist, Unathi Faku, has been nominated for best actor in a supporting role for The Queenstown Kings at the Africa Movie Academy Awards. The awards recognise excellence among professionals working on the continent, or non-African professionals who have contributed to the African film industry. This is Faku’s first nomination as an actor. Uche Okocha’s Nigerian film, The Weekend, leads the nominations with 16, followed by Jagun Jagun with seven. The awards ceremony will be held in Lagos, Nigeria, on the second of November.
# University of Pretoria researchers in association with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, have produced maps of smallholder farms in Gauteng. The maps highlight maize plants and weeds, enabling farmers to pinpoint and eradicate weeds with more precision. Images were taken by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite. The university’s professor Abel Ramoelo says farmers not only save time and money by cutting down the cost and effort required to manage weeds, but also limit the environmental impact of using harmful weed-killing chemicals.
# The world’s largest collegiate society, Golden Key International Honour Society, has welcomed 59 alumni at the Tshwane University of Technology. The TUT Golden Key Chapter was established in 2021, one of the 21 active chapters in South Africa. In March this year, the Society awarded TUT a noble Key Status for its excellence in executing its global vision. Southern Africa Golden Key director, Gillian Cloete, says the organisation will provide the new alumni with resources, support and opportunities as they navigate through college and into their careers.
# University of Fort Hare librarian, Sibongiseni Mrwashu, has won the prestigious Librarian of the Year Award by the Library Information Association of South Africa. The award is in recognition of the achievements and accomplishments of inspiring and exceptional public, academic, school and special librarians. Mrwashu says it is significant that she is the first recipient of this award from the Eastern Cape, adding that it underscores the influence of the collective efforts in promoting the role of libraries in education and community empowerment.
# And finally: Taylor Swift has donated almost 88-million-rand to help those affected by Hurricane Milton, as the deadly storm smashed into the Florida coast. The American megastar with a reported fortune of more than 28-billion-rand, gave the money to the non-profit, Feeding America. Swift is due to play in Miami next week on the final run of her record-breaking Eras Tour. Country musicians including Keith Urban, Luke Combs and Eric Church will stage a benefit concert later this month in North Carolina, for people affected by hurricanes, Helene and Milton.
