# The Table Mountain Cableway is commemorating its 95th anniversary today. To celebrate, South Africans with birthdays in October get a free return ride. The company’s director, Selma Hercules, says a special 195-rand anniversary ticket is also available online for the month. In addition, she says funds raised from the 8 November golf day will support Volunteer Wildfire Services and Wilderness Search and Rescue:
# The South African Navy Festival begins in Simon’s Town’s East Dockyard in Cape Town today, offering a three-day maritime experience. Visitors can engage with Navy personnel and explore vessels, including a Type 209 submarine and a Chinese Navy frigate. The festival also features precision drills, officers’ sword displays, and sea cadet performances. The organisers promise an even bigger event this year, with activities for all ages, celebrating the Navy’s fleet and rich maritime heritage.
# The South African Film and Television Awards are returning for their 18th edition, honouring the very best in the country’s film and television. This year’s theme is, Back to Basics, Celebrating South Africa’s Golden Narratives, focusing on celebrating the fundamental pillars of creativity, quality, and excellence. SAFTA says the theme reflects its commitment to the fundamental principles of storytelling and filmmaking while embracing innovation and creativity in the digital age. The awards ceremony will be held on the 26th of October.
# Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is encouraging pensioners to enjoy free access to the zoo during this month. October is set aside by the United Nations to honour and appreciate senior citizens under this year’s theme, Aging with Dignity. City of Johannesburg’s spokesperson, Virgil James, says this special initiative aims to provide the metro’s valued senior citizens with an unforgettable experience, connecting them with some of nature’s most majestic creatures:
# And finally: The likes of US attorney for the Southern District Damian Williams, actress Nicola Coughlan, tennis world number one Jannik Sinner, and CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, have made Time Magazine’s 2024 Time100 Next list. The list recognises emerging leaders from across the world who are shaping the future. Others who have made the list include Thrive Market CEO Nick Green, swimmer Summer McIntosh, singer Sabrina Carpenter and journalist, lawyer, human-rights activist, and whistle-blower, Agather Atuhaire.
