# Atomic biopic Oppenheimer won the top prize at the Producers Guild of America Awards. The film won the Darryl F Zanuck Award for outstanding producer of theatrical motion pictures. The Bear won the PGA’s Danny Thomas Award for episodic comedy series, RuPaul’s Drag Race won the best-produced competition and game series, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver took the top spot in the variety category. Producer of documentary motion pictures went to American Symphony, while Sesame Street won outstanding children’s programme.
# Reigning Miss South Africa Natasha Joubert has announced her engagement to her partner of nearly nine years Enrico Vermaak. He popped the question during a romantic sunset yacht cruise from the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town over the weekend. Joubert says the setting was perfect and so special as both of their families and friends had flown down for the occasion. She says they will tie the knot when her Miss South Africa reign is over. Miss South Africa Organisation CEO, Stephanie Weil, says they are delighted for the couple.
# The Motsepe Foundation has donated 30-million-rand to 26 university Student Representative Councils. One of the institutions that have benefited from this donation, is the Tshwane University of Technology’s SRC, which has received 1.3-million-rand that will go towards student registration, fees and historical debt. The foundation’s co-founder and CEO, doctor Precious Moloi-Motsepe, says private and non-profit stakeholders need to pledge themselves to actions that will dismantle barriers, inspire hope, and pave pathways of opportunity.
# Cape Town’s renowned hip hop crew, Sublime, is setting its sights on the Hip Hop World Championships later this year. Led by coach Corinne de Beer, the all-female dance team, is preparing for the Provincial Championships then Nationals and eventually, Worlds. Sublime clinched gold at the 2022 Hip Hop Unite World Championships and they were placed first at the Hip Hop International Regionals last year. The group says its ultimate goal is to win gold for South Africa at the World Championships.
# And finally: Women in Japan made history by participating in the Hadaka Matsuri, or Naked Festival, for the first time in one-thousand-250 years at the Konomiya Shrine in central Japan. Seven groups of women joined the ritual, to ward off evil spirits and pray for happiness. However, women did not partake in the festival’s main event, where men traditionally clash to drive away evil spirits, due to its physical nature. Another naked festival is scheduled to take place this week at Kokuseki Temple in northern Japan.
