# President Cyril Ramaphosa has congratulated South African comedian Trevor Noah for winning an Emmy award. He won for Outstanding Talk Series with The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. With the win, Noah makes history as the first African and first black person to win an Emmy for an outstanding talk series since the category’s introduction in 2015. Ramaphosa says Noah is part of a stellar cast of South Africans globally, whose diverse talents and skills are enjoyed and valued wherever they go.
# Two University of Fort Hare postgraduate students from the Economics Department have made it into the top ten finalists of the 52nd Nedbank and Old Mutual Budget Speech Competition. The competition challenges Economics and Finance students from South Africa’s 26 universities to write an essay that speaks to the country’s current key social and economic challenges. Both in their final year towards a Master of Commerce Degree, Peter Mugwira and Ernest Pedzayi, say they are honoured to be counted among the top ten.
# The Western Cape government says 231 young men, aged 18 to 25-years, have embarked on an empowering journey at the Chrysalis Academy. Hailing from various areas in the province, including Beaufort-west, Khayelitsha, and Nyanga, the participants will undergo a three-month training until April. The academy has positively impacted over ten-thousand graduates since 2000. MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety Reagen Allen says the programme, focusing on personal growth, leadership, and life skills, offers graduates a 12-month employment opportunity:
# A 23-year-old KwaZulu-Natal-based artist, Ricollin Moodley, has ventured into an unconventional approach by creating artwork using lipstick. He utilises lipstick to craft portraits of various South Africans, symbolising their global and local impact. Moodley’s unique creations have gained recognition worldwide, providing his artistry with a new dimension of appreciation. Notable lipstick portraits include figures such as Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, Springbok wing Cheslin Kolbe, and pop star Tyla.
# And finally: The Rhino Orphanage in Limpopo is celebrating the birth of a calf born to Kaytie, a rescued orphan raised at the institution before being released into the wild. Management says the baby was named Mrembo, a Swahili word meaning beautiful girl, and her arrival is a significant milestone, showcasing the success of rescuing, raising, and releasing rhino orphans into the wild. Kaytie is the third rhino from the orphanage to give birth in the wild, contributing to the next generation of the animals in their natural habitat.
