# The Daily Show With Trevor Noah won Outstanding Talk Series at the 75th Emmy Awards. This is the first win for the show since Jon Stewart’s final year as host. The South African comedian is the first black person to win an Emmy for this category. The Daily Show beat The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Problem with Jon Stewart and Late Night with Seth Meyers, for the award. Noah, who left the Comedy Central show more than a year ago, accepted the award:
# The 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day is celebrating its tenth birthday on the 27th of this month, with festivities set to take place at The Farmhouse at Steyn City in Midrand, Gauteng. The initiative was started as a challenge to Carolyn Steyn in honour of the late president Nelson Mandela and has grown into a project that creates hundreds of thousands of blankets for people in need. Steyn this initiative has transformed into what some are calling a movement that has captured the attention of the world.
# The City of Cape Town is pleased to report that the Waste Awareness Programme for the city’s beaches has been completed successfully. The city conducted an engaging awareness and education programme on beaches last month. Mayoral committee member for Urban Waste Management, Grant Twigg, says the theme of the programme was The Ocean is Home, aimed to instil a sense of responsibility and appreciation for oceans, particularly among the younger generation:
# Soccer: Argentina and Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi won men’s player of the year at the Fifa Best Awards held in London. The awards recognise the most exceptional performer between December 19th, 2022 and August 20th, 2023. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who guided the team to the treble last season, won best men’s coach, while City’s Ederson collected the goalkeeper award. England women’s manager Sarina Wiegman was named coach of the year, with Manchester United’s Mary Earps winning the best goalkeeper award for the second successive year.
# And finally, the zebra foal at Pretoria East’s Klapperkop Nature Reserve has been named Kamari, following a naming competition conducted by the Tshwane Metro. In a statement, City of Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink says the name, derived from Swahili, means “moon”. Over 300 entries were submitted for the competition, and the winner received a prize of a two-night stay for four at Rietvlei Nature Reserve.
