Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# The annual Aardklop Arts Festival in Potchefstroom was a major success with a great turnout. Established in 1998, this vibrant festival celebrates Afrikaans culture through art, music, theatre, comedy, and literature. Aardklop not only showcases talented performers but also offers local vendors a platform to display their products. Festival director, Alexa Strachan, says the event highlights the rich heritage of the Afrikaans community:
# This week marks National Science Week under the theme, Living in a high-tech world: should we be concerned? intended to elicit critical thought on the fast breakthroughs in technology and its impact. This annual event aims to close the gap between society and science. The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement says the goal is to build a country that has the necessary scientific knowledge, is aware of scientific and technological developments, and can form its own opinions about scientific matters.
# The City of Cape Town says this year’s Chess@Libraries was the biggest one yet with 150 players participating in the final tournament in Parow. David Baxter representing Durbanville Library walked away as the champion, second place honours went to Romeo Raubenheimer from Adriaanse Library, and Parow Library’s Llewellyn Louw took third place. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross, says this year’s event saw 31 libraries register to participate:
# The Llema Le Rona Agriculture Development Project in Soshanguve in the north of the Tshwane metro says it is laying the groundwork for school gardening projects, that not only educate but also provide practical experience. Project manager Katleho Tsotetsi says the inspiration behind the project stems from the recognition of the gaps in agricultural education, and employment within the Soshanguve community. Tsotetsi says they aim to cultivate a future where food security, education, and community collaboration are tackled head-on to ensure the community flourishes.
# And finally: Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot starring Lupita Nyong’o grossed over 598-million-rand in its debut weekend, making it the third-best opening an animated movie has seen in September ever. The film is based on Peter Brown’s bestseller about a robot nicknamed ROZ, who forms an unexpected bond with an orphaned gosling and other creatures after being shipwrecked on an abandoned island. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which is in its fourth weekend in theatres, took second spot at the box office followed by Transformers One.
