# Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelethini, who was born at Hlabisa Hospital in northern KwaZulu-Natal, is celebrating his 50th birthday today. He is the first-born son of the late King Goodwill Zwelithini and his late, Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu. The Zulu Nation Traditional Prime Minister, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has wished blessings upon the King’s life and wisdom to lead his people. His Majesty will spend the day in quiet reflection ahead of the official King Shaka’s Day Commemoration event at KwaDukuza tomorrow, where he will deliver the keynote address.
# A rare painting from René Magritte’s famous L’empire des lumières series is estimated to sell for more than one-billion-rand at Christie’s New York auction in November. It is one of the 27 paintings in which Magritte explored light by painting a sunlit sky above a darkened street scene. If the painting, which comes from the estate of the late interior designer Mica Ertegun, sells at the estimated price, it will break Magritte’s auction record.
# Today is International Day of Sign Languages, an opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users. This year’s theme is Sign up for Sign Language Rights. According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are more than 70 million deaf people worldwide, and more than 80-percent of them live in developing countries. Collectively, they use more than 300 different sign languages. On this day people are urged to learn sign language and increase awareness.
# Warner Brothers’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Danny DeVito, has continued to dominate the box office in North America. The movie has made around five-billion-rand globally. Transformers One starring Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson came in second, with Speak No Evil sliding down to three. Lionsgate’s Never Let Go landed in fourth with Marvel and Disney’s Deadpool and Wolverine rounding out the top five.
# And finally: The City of Cape Town has launched the newly-developed Digital Vault, allowing people globally to access and explore artworks and heritage items that make up the metro’s collection. This is an online tool to manage art and heritage objects. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross, says the launch of the Digital Vault during Heritage Month strengthens the metro’s commitment to preserving the history, diverse cultures and heritage of Cape Town:
