# South Africa’s Tyla won her first MTV Video Music Award for Best Afrobeats for her hit song Water, making history as the first female African artist to win a VMA. Taylor Swift, who had 12 nominations, won seven, including Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration for Fortnight featuring Post Malone. She is now the most-awarded artist in VMA history. Tyla says the impact her song has had globally is a testament that African music can be pop music too:
# Miss South Africa, Mia Le Roux, has stressed the importance of embracing diversity and inclusivity in society. She took part in the first Sign Language and Music Enhancement Mini Festival at the Transoranje School for the Deaf in Pretoria. The festival was hosted by the Gauteng Education, Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation Department, which showcased the learners’ newly acquired skills in Basic South African Sign Language and music. Le Roux encouraged the learners to take pride in their unique abilities:
# The University of Pretoria has awarded professor Jane Knight an honorary doctorate. She is a leading scholar in the fields of higher education, internationalisation, globalisation, public policy and international relations. Knight, an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto, is renowned in academic circles for her contributions to the international, intercultural and global dimensions of international higher education. She says this recognition represents the values of excellence, integrity and social justice that are fundamental to her work.
# The We’re Against Starvation Foundation has set a target to pack three-thousand-600 lunchboxes per month for children in need. Through their Kids’ Lunchbox Project, the foundation seeks to provide essential meals to underserved communities in Krugersdorp, Gauteng. Founder Esmarelda van Zyl highlights the importance of nourishing children’s minds and bodies. The public may offer support through food donations, lunchbox supplies, or financial contributions.
# And finally, the City of Cape Town has partnered with Norse Atlantic Airways on a campaign to promote their inaugural London-Cape Town flights commencing on the 28th of October. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says as part of the partnership, Choose Cape Town marketing material will hit the streets of London, where it will cover 40 of the British capital’s famous black cabs for November. He says destination marketing plays a key role in the five-point plan to grow Cape Town’s tourism industry:
