# The University of Cape Town’s Institute for Creative Arts is set to host its 2024 Live Art Festival at the Hiddingh Campus in Gardens from tomorrow until Saturday. The festival is anchored around live art performances by renowned artists like South Africa’s godfather of performance art John Nankin, Nigeria’s Jelili Atiku, and Mozambican dancer and choreographer Pak Ndjamena. The institute says the festival will focus significantly on creating conversations and relationships that galvanize the emergence of a new geo-cultural programme of collaboration, exchange and networking.
# Basic Education minister Siviwe Gwarube has launched a nationwide learning and listening campaign in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape. The tour aims to gain a deeper understanding of the education sector focusing on identifying the unique challenges, opportunities, and priorities each provincial education sector faces. Gwarube told the SABC safety in schools is crucial following the rise in extortion cases:
# The University of the Witwatersrand and mining giant AngloGold Ashanti have launched the Wits AngloGold Ashanti Legacy Scholarship Endowment. The 87.5-million-rand initiative will offer comprehensive funding and support to eligible students from disadvantaged and rural families. Vice-chancellor Zeblon Vilakazi says the scholarship is part of a larger investment in legacy projects in education and agriculture that AngloGold Ashanti will carry out over the next five years:
# Beanies for Beings has launched the Sponsor a Senior Santa Goodie Hamper campaign, to bring festive cheer to seniors and security staff at Tornado Park Old Age Centre in Roodepoort, Gauteng. Individuals, families, and businesses are urged to donate full hampers, money, or items to assemble the hampers. Students can also earn community service hours by donating a complete hamper. Drop-off points include Wonderland Pre-Primary, Randridge Mall, and the Beanies for Beings Charity Shop. The campaign runs until the 30th of November.
# And finally, three films screened at the 51st Telluride Film Festival in Colorado in the US have been tipped to win an Oscar. They are Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner Anora, Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical Emilia Pérez, and Jason Reitman’s dark comedy Saturday Night. Will Ferrell could land his first Oscar nomination for the documentary Will and Harper. Another film that made an impact is Malcolm Washington’s directorial debut, The Piano Lesson. The official Oscar nominations will be announced on the 17th of January.
