# The Johannesburg Development Agency is leading the charge in empowering women to play a bigger role in shaping the city’s built environment. The city’s spokesperson, Nthatisi Modingoane, says the state-of-the-art Hikhensile Clinic, currently under construction, is a prime example of the agency’s commitment to empowering women and improving healthcare access. Modingoane says led by female-owned company Big O Developments, the clinic will offer a range of services to the community, including 16 consulting rooms and a spacious waiting area:
# The latest rankings of the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy has once again placed the North-West University among the top seven South African universities in its 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities. The institution says it has been listed in the 601 to 700 ranking category internationally, which is an achievement, as only the best one-thousand out of more than two-thousand-500 universities ranked annually are published. Six objective indicators are used to rank world universities, including the number of alumni who win Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.
# The University of Fort Hare’s Music Department has acquired its first-ever state-of-the-art Music Technology Lab. The facility features the latest in music production software, high-quality audio equipment, and advanced digital interfaces designed to enhance learning and creativity. The university says the cutting-edge laboratory promises to revolutionise music education and production. The music department went from having 13 students for its first intake in 2012 to now having 168 students majoring in various genres such as African Music, Jazz and Western Music.
# The University of Pretoria in partnership with EyeBrainGym hosted the national finals for the Reading Riot competition, showcasing the reading talents of Grade 6 learners from across the country. This initiative promotes literacy and comprehension skills and fosters a love of reading among learners. The winner of the national finals was Stanton Steenkamp of the Northern Cape, who became the national champion. The university says it is determined to enhance literacy skills and encourage a culture of reading.
# And finally, US pop star Taylor Swift concluded the UK and European run of her record-breaking Eras Tour at Wembley Stadium in London. She is the first solo artist to ever play at Wembley eight times in a single tour. This overtakes a record for any solo singer, which was set by Michael Jackson with his Bad Tour in 1988. In the UK alone, she performed to almost 1.2-million people. Swift is set to perform a string of shows in the US and Canada, including in Miami, New Orleans, and Indianapolis.
