# Newly crowned Miss South Africa Mia le Roux is using her platform to champion inclusivity and inspire those with disabilities to dream big. The 28-year-old was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at the age of one. As the country heads towards Casual Day in September, driven by the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities, Le Roux shared a heartfelt message on her social media. She highlighted that everyone is seen, worthy and that their dreams matter. Le Roux has vowed to continue motivating and uplifting the disabled community.
# University of Pretoria’s doctor Rakeshnie Ramoutar-Prieschl says women are increasingly assuming leadership roles, driving innovation and spearheading ground-breaking research. She says this is due to a seismic shift in attitudes and perceptions surrounding gender roles in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields in recent years. Ramoutar-Prieschl says the challenge of empowering women in science leadership for sustainability is further exacerbated by the digital divide and the advent of artificial intelligence:
# The Slow Fashion Festival will take place at the V&A Waterfront’s The Watershed in Cape Town tomorrow. The event aims to unite fashion enthusiasts committed to ethical and innovative practices. The festival offers a day of creativity and sustainability, featuring activities such as a swap and mend session, craft circles with the Cape Town Craft Club, and workshops on zero-waste T-shirts and denim repurposing. The next Slow Fashion Festival will take place in Johannesburg on the 14th of next month.
# American vice president Kamala Harris and her running mate in the November election, Tim Walz, are pulling out all the stops to move the needle for voters. The Designers for Democracy collection features new, exclusive merchandise crafted by renowned designers, including Vera Wang, Tory Burch, Prabal Gurung, and Thom Browne. The clothes include solid-coloured T-shirts, sweaters, scarves, and socks with slogans like “Reproductive Rights Now,” “Vote Democracy,” and “Harris 2024.” The campaign has already secured endorsements from Hollywood celebrities like George Clooney, Barbra Streisand, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
# And finally, music legend Elton John will be the headline performer at City of Hope’s Spirit of Life Gala in Los Angeles in October. City of Hope is one of the largest cancer research and treatment organisations in the US. At the gala, AEG Presents CEO, Jay Marciano, will be honoured with the prestigious Spirit of Life Award, for his longtime philanthropic and humanitarian efforts. Marciano leads the company that produced John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour as well as Taylor Swift’s Eras tour.
