# Afrikaans television series are fast becoming popular in Asia, with the latest one being Wyfie. It follows four mismatched hostel roommates, played by Beáta Bena Green, Celeste Loots, Kristen Raath and Mienke Ehlers. The series directed by Johan Cronjé, has been nominated for Best International Series at the Seoul International Drama Awards. Showmax’s Spinners starring Cantona James and Dillon Windvogel, has also been popular in Shanghai, winning Best Foreign TV Series at the Shanghai TV Festival in June.
# With winter coming to an end, South Africa’s wildflower season has kicked in. Namaqua National Park in the Northern Cape and the West Coast National Park in the Western Cape remain popular spots. In the Northern Cape, Namaqualand daisies and more than three-thousand-500 floral species emerge from early August to the end of September and offer one of the world’s greatest flower shows. Meanwhile, the West Coast National Park’s Postberg section is now open, offering an opportunity for visitors to witness the breathtaking beauty of seasonal blooms.
# Fifteen children are set to receive prosthetic legs through a collaboration between Walter Sisulu University’s Department of Rehabilitation and the Eastern Cape Health Department. This initiative, commemorating 30 years of democracy, will involve casting and pre-prosthetic fitting visits to Mthatha, Gqeberha, and East London. The university’s Siphosethu Mgwili says they will use paediatric prosthetic components from the university, and the prosthetic legs will be manufactured in Mthatha and distributed at the end of this month.
# University of Limpopo professor Lesibana Rafapa has been awarded the prestigious Fellow of the English Academy Award by the English Academy of Southern Africa. This is in recognition of his significant contributions to the promotion of English Studies and Northern Sotho literature. The university says this award is reserved for deserving council members of the academy, and for non-members worldwide who have provided exceptional service in promoting English as an adapted global language. Rafapa is the first recipient of this award from the university.
# And, Belize, a small country in Central America, has been ranked as the best place for family-friendly activities, with 24.78-percent of its total attractions geared towards children. This is according to a survey by tour operator Go2Africa. Belize offers an array of attractions from stunning beaches to cultural sites including the ancient Mayan ruins of Xunantunich. Costa Rica, one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, with over 500-thousand species of wildlife, is second on the list. Brazil, Samoa, and Vanuatu make up the top five.
