# Artists including platinum-selling singer-songwriter Jesse Clegg, Kamo Mphela, Lebo Mashile, and Zoë Modiga will perform at the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant in Pretoria on Saturday. The finalists include marketing manager and model, Mia le Roux, from the Western Cape, model from Soweto, Gauteng, Taahira Katz, and law student Onalenna Constantin from the North West. Natasha Joubert is the reigning Miss SA. Media personality and style icon, Bonang Matheba, will be the host.
Staying with music: A South African rapper, currently based in Los Angeles, Nomoya Refiloe Dube, will make her big debut in the MHL and The Fugees Tour this month. The tour, which includes Lauryn Hill, YG Marley, The Fugees, and D.I.O. will start in Florida on Friday, and close off in Paris, London, and Amsterdam. Known professionally as MOYA, the Mpumalanga rapper is gearing up to release her debut single Big Boy Gun. She says her sound is very versatile, more Caribbean, but leaning towards country and hip-hop with a touch of reggae.
# Seven University of Cape Town researchers have been awarded a South African Medical Research Council self-initiated research grant to forward their research interests. Nationally the council received 303 eligible applications for this award and from those they awarded 52 applicants across the country. One of the grant winners is doctor Colleen O’Ryan, whose research is on the genetics and molecular biology of autism in SA populations. Another winner is doctor Hlengiwe Madlala, who is researching minimising cardiovascular disease risk in pregnant women living with HIV.
# Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital’s Department of Nuclear Medicine’s Clinical Unit head was recently recognised internationally for her work. Doctor Bawinile Hadebe received the Best International Abstract Award at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Conference in Toronto, Canada. Hadebe’s study focused on cervical cancer, highlighting how it remains a global health crisis. She was also recently awarded the 2023 Discovery Foundation Fellowship Award.
# And finally, the Western Cape Government has offered Zip Zap Circus a new site at the Artscape Theatre Centre’s Plaza forecourt. After 16 years at The Dome in the Founders Garden, Zip Zap’s lease is expected to end next year. Founder Brent van Rensburg says the new Zip Zap Arena will cater to circus arts and other art forms like drama, ballet, dance, and opera. The new design of the arena will resemble a traditional circus tent with a modern twist. The total project will cost almost 100-million-rand.
