# First-time Midmar Mile medallist, Kristy Greener, says she is proud of being able to complete the 51st edition of the world’s largest open-water swimming event at Midmar Dam near Howick. She is a blind University of KwaZulu-Natal staffer, who has idiopathic motor polyneuropathy, an illness affecting her hands and feet. Greener completed the Capital-K open water swim in 2022 and last year before doing the Midmar Mile this year. She says she is more determined to improve her time of one-hour-and-14-minutes next year.
# The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at the University of Pretoria has broadened its transformative impact by prioritising more women, refugees, internally displaced people, and people with disabilities. The programme fosters positive change by supporting the next generation of leaders, who demonstrate excellence in their field of study, but face financial barriers to higher education. The university’s interim vice-chancellor, Themba Mosia, says the programme has exceeded its mission to shape the lives of academically gifted African students at universities globally.
# The City of Cape Town says it is taking advantage of valuable opportunities to engage young minds on the issue of waste and to encourage them to be part of the solution, through education. The city’s Urban Waste Management Waste awareness team recently visited iKhwezilesizwe Primary School in Khayelitsha, to provide valuable education about recycling at schools. Mayoral committee member for Urban Waste Management, Grant Twigg, says the city’s anti-litter mascot, Bingo, has been a great help:
# Meghan Markle will be part of a star-studded opening day panel at the South by Southwest Conference which kicks off on Friday. The panel is titled Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen. The Duchess of Sussex will be joined by model, actress and entrepreneur Brooke Shields, journalist Katie Couric, and author, sociologist, and pop culture expert, Nancy Wang Yuen. Featured speakers at this year’s conference include singer and actress Selena Gomez, actress Pamela Adlon, and rapper Danny Brown.
# And finally: Motorsport: Former Austrian driver Gerhard Berger is overjoyed over the recovery of his Ferrari that was stolen 28 years ago. The super car disappeared shortly after the San Marino Grand Prix in Italy in 1995, together with the private car of French driver Jean Alesi. London’s metropolitan police recently started an investigation after Ferrari informed them a car sold via a British broker turned out to be stolen. Police traced the red Testarossa’s background within four days and re-united it with the rightful owner.
