Eco Minute 13:30
BULLETIN 26 March 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The Green Connection and Natural Justice have taken legal action against the approval granted to TotalEnergies EP South Africa for exploratory drilling in block 5, 6 and 7 off the Cape coast. They argue the decision fails to assess socio-economic impacts, ignores climate change effects, and neglects proper evaluation of oil spill contingency plans. Green Connection’s Strategic lead, Liziwe McDaid, stresses the need for adherence to environmental laws and protection of coastal resources for future generations, to ensure sustainable management of the oceans.
# The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level two warning for severe thunderstorms resulting in localised flooding over the central parts of the Northern Cape and the north-eastern parts of the Western Cape today. In the Northern Cape, partly cloudy, windy, and warm to hot weather with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, can be excepted. Weather forecaster, Stacy Colborne, says in the Western Cape, isolated showers and thundershowers can be expected over the eastern parts, but scattered in the extreme east:
# And finally: The University of Cape Town’s Underwater Club has teamed up with the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town to raise funds for turtle conservation and sponsor 50 teenagers to enrol in a Marine Science course. Dubbed the Diver24, the annual fundraiser, which will take place on the sixth of next month, will see over 85 divers come together to complete a 24-hour relay dive in the I&J Ocean Exhibit. The money raised will go to the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation. Organisers are hoping to raise 45-thousand-rand.
