Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The Waste Association of South Africa says during the 2022/23 reporting period, a 31-percent recycling rate for polystyrene was achieved. One of the driving forces behind this achievement is the growing demand for sustainable waste management solutions. The association’s Adri Spangenberg says the integration of polystyrene recycling into household waste collection systems signifies a pivotal shift in waste management practices. She adds this has paved the way for more inclusive and comprehensive recycling programmes.
# A civil society organisation dedicated to ensuring access to clean water, WaterCAN, has expressed alarm over the dire water supply situation in Johannesburg. Executive manager Ferrial Adam highlights the failure of Rand Water and Joburg Water to manage resources adequately, pushing the city to the brink of crisis. WaterCAN is hosting a meeting next week to discuss the crisis. Adam demands accountability from water authorities, emphasising the need for immediate solutions to avert catastrophe.
# And finally: A Hammarsdale-based company, Mathe Group, says there is significant potential for growth in the use of crumb rubber in road construction. The company recycles one-thousand radial truck tyres every day, transforming them into 45 tons of crumb rubber. This valuable material is then used to create rubber-modified bitumen, which is used extensively for major road upgrades across the country. Mathe says this process results in a stronger, more durable road surface, while also promoting environmental sustainability.
