# Activism organisation Just Share emphasises the need for meaningful penalties for companies failing to comply with carbon budgets and greenhouse gas mitigation plans. Just Share says once enforced, the Climate Change Act will provide South Africa with its first law specifically targeting climate change. However, the current version lacks penalties for exceeding carbon budgets. Just Share calls for penalties in draft regulations to ensure the act’s effectiveness and Paris Agreement-aligned emission reductions are achieved.
# The City of Cape Town has approved the latest international technical assistance for among others its net zero carbon, solar and energy sustainability plans. German development agency the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit is supporting the implementation of the city’s projects funded through the C40 Climate Finance Facility. Mayoral committee member for Energy, Beverley Van Reenen, says the city’s planned energy projects require a significant amount of resources, including technical assistance and world-class expertise:
# And finally: Researchers believe the conservation of invertebrates guarantees pest control and increased productivity, without damaging ecosystems. Pests are responsible for around ten-percent of crop losses every year, but controlling them has led to the widespread use of chemical pesticides. Researchers in Brazil, the US and the Czech Republic analysed past research on predator pest control. They found they helped reduce pest populations by more than 70-percent, while increasing crop yields by 25-percent.
