# Multinational beer producer Heineken has invested 2.3-billion-rand in its returnable bottle programme in South Africa, as part of its goal to move to 65-percent returnable glass bottles. This is aligned with the company’s global ambition of net-zero carbon by 2040 as per its Brew a Better World strategy. Heineken is also aiming to complete five green zones in Phillipi, Cape Town, Eldorado Park and Lawley, in Johannesburg in the first half of this year. These are a collection of open parks and meadows complemented by food and flower gardens.
# The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services has urged caution as temperatures soar. The South African Weather Service forecasts over 40 degrees Celsius for the next 48 hours. Spokesperson Anesca Roodt warns of heightened wildfire risk. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution to prevent the rapid spread of fires during this period:
# And finally: The United Nations Environmental Assembly has expressed confidence in its ability to address climate change through multilateral environmental agreements. The agreements cover a wide scope of issues, ranging from the protection of the atmosphere, and sustainable management of chemicals and waste, to halting nature and biodiversity loss. UN Environment Assembly president, Leila Benali, says their response must demonstrate that multilateral diplomacy can deliver.
