BULLETIN 26 February 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The South Africa Council for Geoscience is hosting a stakeholder consultation in Mpumalanga to tackle climate change. Spearheading carbon capture, utilisation and storage efforts, the council aims to reduce carbon emissions and transition away from coal dependency. CEO Mosa Mabuza highlights the project’s significance in addressing environmental concerns while fostering sustainable energy practices:
# The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level two warning for severe thunderstorms over parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo today. This will result in strong winds, excessive lightning and heavy downpours leading to localised flooding. The weather service says there is a 60-percent chance of rain in Gauteng. It says Mpumalanga will be cloudy in the east with showers and rain, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm, while scattered showers are expected in Limpopo.
# And finally: The sixth United Nations Environment Assembly focusing on addressing the interlinkages of the three planetary environmental crises gets underway in Nairobi, Kenya, today. The assembly will focus on how multilateralism can help tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. Cities are the biggest drivers of the triple planetary crisis, consuming the lion’s share of energy, food and resources, giving back around 70-percent of CO2 emissions and over 50-percent of global waste.
